4-inch ASME B16.9 / ASME A403 WP304 butt-welded stainless steel elbow will not rust under normal use conditions, but it may still rust if the environment is harsh or it is used improperly. The following is a detailed analysis:
1. Material characteristics (WP304 stainless steel)
Composition: 18% chromium (Cr), 8% nickel (Ni), containing a small amount of carbon (C≤0.08%).
Rust prevention principle: Chromium reacts with oxygen to form a dense passivation film (Cr₂O₃), which isolates water and oxygen to prevent further corrosion.
Applicable environment: Resistant to atmosphere, fresh water, weak acid/alkali media (such as daily water treatment, food, chemical industry, etc.).
2. Situations where rust may occur
(1) Environmental factors
Chloride ion (Cl⁻) corrosion:
Seawater, salt spray environment, bleach (NaClO), etc. will cause the passivation film to be destroyed, causing pitting or stress corrosion cracking.
Solution: Use 316 stainless steel (containing 2% molybdenum, which is more resistant to chloride ions).
High temperature oxidation:
When exposed to high temperatures above 400℃ for a long time, 304 will oxidize and discolor (surface rust), but it usually does not affect the structural strength.
(2) Surface contamination
Iron chip contamination:
During processing or installation, the residual iron chips will rust when in contact with carbon steel tools (false rust).
Solution: Use a stainless steel cleaner to remove contaminants after installation.
Mechanical damage:
Scratches damage the passivation film and local rust may occur. It can be repaired by pickling and passivation.
(3) Welding problems
Untreated after welding:
Carbides may precipitate in the heat-affected zone of welding, reducing corrosion resistance.
Solution: Pickling + passivation treatment after welding, or choose low-carbon 304L (C≤0.03%).
3. How to avoid rust?
Material selection:
Select 316L in chloride ion environment, and 904L or duplex steel in extreme environment.
Maintenance:
Clean the surface regularly to avoid long-term retention of corrosive media.
Use stainless steel maintenance agent (such as passivation solution containing nitric acid).
Installation:
Avoid direct contact with carbon steel and use insulating gaskets to prevent electrochemical corrosion.
4. Post-treatment of rust
Mild rust: Wipe with stainless steel cleaning paste or white vinegar + baking soda.
Severe corrosion: Re-passivate after mechanical polishing, or replace with higher grade materials.

Normal situation: 304 stainless steel elbows are almost rust-free in a clean, neutral environment.
Risk scenario: High chlorine, high temperature, and polluted environments need to be cautious. It is recommended to upgrade the material or strengthen protection.
