Why do the prices of elbows vary so much?

Jun. 25, 2025

The difference in elbow prices is mainly determined by the following factors. Understanding these factors can help you better choose products that suit your needs:

1. Material differences

Ordinary materials: such as carbon steel (Q235, A106, etc.) or PVC, are low-cost and suitable for general working conditions.

Corrosion-resistant/high-temperature-resistant materials: such as stainless steel (304, 316), alloy steel (such as 316L, duplex steel), nickel-based alloys, etc., are significantly more expensive, but suitable for chemical, high-temperature or corrosive environments.

2. Production process

Cold-formed elbows: Through cold bending processing, the cost is low, but the accuracy and strength may be insufficient.

Hot-pushing elbows: high-temperature forming, uniform wall thickness, strong pressure bearing capacity, and higher prices.

Cast elbows: suitable for complex shapes, but may have pore defects; forged elbows have better performance and higher prices.

3. Standards and certifications

Products of international standards (such as ASTM, DIN, EN) or industry certifications (API, CE) require strict testing and are more expensive.

Non-standard or small factory products may be low-priced, but there are quality risks.

4. Size and wall thickness

Large-diameter (such as DN300 and above) and thick-walled elbows are more expensive due to the large amount of materials and complex processes.

Special specifications (such as reducing elbows) need to be customized, which increases the cost.

5. Surface treatment and anti-corrosion

Galvanizing, spraying, pickling and passivation can improve corrosion resistance, but will increase costs.

Ordinary elbows have no special treatment and are relatively cheap.

6. Brand and supply chain

Well-known brands (such as Nippon Steel and Baosteel) have higher prices due to quality assurance and after-sales service.

Market supply and demand fluctuations (such as steel price increases) will also affect prices.

7. Procurement channels

Factory direct sales are usually cheaper than dealers, but the minimum order quantity must be met.

E-commerce platforms may offer low-priced products, but you need to pay attention to authenticity.

How to choose?

Ordinary water pipes/low-pressure systems: Carbon steel cold-bent elbows are optional, which are economical and affordable.

Petroleum/chemical: Stainless steel or alloy steel hot-push elbows are recommended to ensure safety.

Limited budget: Compare multiple suppliers, but verify quality certification (such as material report, pressure test).

By clarifying the usage scenarios and requirements (such as pressure level, media corrosiveness), you can more accurately balance cost and performance.

Advantages of seamless carbon steel elbows

The raw material for seamless carbon steel elbows is seamless steel pipe. The main production process involves heating and piercing a round tube billet, then rolling it using three-roll cross rolling, continuous rolling, or extrusion to set (or reduce) the outer diameter of the pipe. After cooling, it is straightened. It undergoes direct hydrostatic testing (or flaw detection), is marked, and then stored. Schxx represents the wall thickness grade; 180e (S) indicates a short-radius 180° carbon steel elbow, and 180e (L) indicates a long-radius 180° elbow; 90E (S) indicates a short-radius 90° carbon steel elbow, and 90e (L) indicates a long-radius 90° elbow; 45

180° carbon steel pipe elbow manufacturing process

The most common manufacturing process for carbon steel pipe bends is hot forming. Hot forming is divided into two types: hot push bending and hot heating bending. Our 180° carbon steel pipe bends are manufactured using the hot push process. The process flow diagram is shown below.

What are the advantages of using sliding flanges?

A sliding flange is a type of slip-on flange. Slip-on welding involves welding only the outer layer, not the inner layer. Slip-on flanges are typically used for medium- and low-pressure pipelines with a nominal pressure less than 2.5 MPa. There are four types of sealing faces for slip-on flanges: flat face, raised face (RF), FM/M, and tongue and groove (TG). Flat face is the most widely used and the cheapest. A sliding flange is a slip-on flange with a short neck. Carbon steel sliding flanges, or SO flanges, are generally cheaper than welded neck flanges, which is why customers often choose sliding flanges. As the name suggests, a sliding flange fits over a
