What is the ASTM standard for stainless steel flanges?

ASTM standards for stainless steel flanges mainly involve materials, manufacturing and testing requirements. The following are key standards and their application scope:

1. Material standards

ASTM A182/A182M

Scope of application: forged or rolled stainless steel flanges, pipe fittings, valves, etc.

Common grades:

304/304L (UNS S30400/S30403)

316/316L (UNS S31600/S31603)

321 (UNS S32100)

347 (UNS S34700)

Requirements: specify chemical composition, mechanical properties (such as tensile strength, yield strength) and heat treatment process.

ASTM A240/A240M

Scope of application: stainless steel plates, sheets and strips (raw materials for flange manufacturing).

Grade: Same as A182, but applicable to plate form.

2. Manufacturing and Dimension Standards

ASME B16.5

Pipe flanges and flanged fittings (NPS ½"~24"), covering pressure classes (Class 150~2500), flange types (WN, SO, SW, etc.) and sizes.

Compatible materials: ASTM A182 stainless steel flanges must comply with the size requirements of this standard.

ASME B16.47

Large diameter flanges (NPS 26"~60"), divided into Series A (MSS SP-44) and Series B (API 605).

ASME B16.36

Orifice flanges (for flow measurement), usually made of ASTM A182 materials.

3. Testing and Inspection Standards

ASTM A961/A961M

General requirements, including dimensional tolerances, markings, pressure tests, etc. of flanges.

Supplementary requirements: Nondestructive testing (such as RT, UT), hardness testing, etc. may be specified.

ASTM E165/E426

Liquid penetrant testing (PT) and eddy current testing (ET) methods for detecting surface defects.

4. Special application standards

ASTM A350/A350M

Forged steel flanges for low temperature use (such as LF2), but A182 is usually preferred for stainless steel flanges.

ASTM A403/A403M

Forged austenitic stainless steel pipe fittings (including flanges), but A182 is more commonly used.

5. Marking and certification

ASTM A182 flange marking must include:

Material grade (such as F304L), ASTM standard number, manufacturer identification, heat treatment batch number, etc.

Certification: A material report (MTR) is usually required, which complies with ASME Section IX or PED (EU Pressure Directive).

Example: ASTM A182 F316L flange

Material: 316L stainless steel (low carbon, corrosion resistant).

Pressure rating: Class 150 (according to ASME B16.5).

Size: NPS 4", WN (weld flange).

Test: Water pressure test according to ASTM A961, hardness test HB≤187.

Selection suggestions

Clear working conditions: pressure, temperature, medium (such as 316L for acidic environment).

Matching standard: Preferred combination of ASTM A182 + ASME B16.5.

Verification and certification: Suppliers are required to provide MTR and NDT reports (if necessary).
