What is a flat flange?

Jul. 04, 2025

A flat face flange, also known as a raised face flange, is a flange that has a smooth flat surface on the mating side (where the gasket or sealing surface is located). This flat surface provides a flat surface against which the gasket can be compressed to form a seal between the two flanges. Flat face flanges are often used in piping systems and pressure vessels where a safe and reliable seal is required.

Flat face flanges are one of the most common flange types used in the industrial sector. It is designed to provide a simple and effective way to connect two pipes or components together. There is a ridge in the center of the flange that helps to properly position the gasket and ensure that the mating flanges are properly aligned.

When installing a flat face flange, a gasket is placed between the two mating surfaces to form a seal. This gasket can be made of a variety of materials, such as rubber, fiber, or metal, depending on the application and the media being contained. The flat surface of the flange allows for a tight seal, which is critical to maintaining the integrity of the system in which it is used.

Flat face flanges are available in a variety of sizes and pressures and can be made from a variety of materials, including carbon steel, stainless steel, and other alloys. They are suitable for a variety of applications, including water, oil, gas, and chemical services.

Why are elbows made of stainless steel?

Stainless steel stamped elbows are suitable for pipeline systems in petroleum, chemical, hydropower, natural gas, construction, and steam storage tank industries because they can be used directly as raw materials without the need for blanks. Large-diameter thin-walled carbon steel elbows can serve as low-cost pipe-making equipment and molds. By shortening the production cycle, production management costs can be significantly reduced. Especially for large steel elbows, the blank surface is smooth, with good ductility, and the stamping process is simple, precise, easy to operate, and assembly and welding processes are also very convenient.
