Carbon steel elbows are very common pipe fittings in oil, gas, chemical, power, shipbuilding, and industrial piping systems, primarily used to change the flow direction of pipelines.
Based on differences in angle, radius of curvature, connection method, and manufacturing process, carbon steel elbows can be divided into several types. Choosing the right elbow not only affects pipeline installation efficiency but also influences the fluid resistance, pressure, and service life of the entire pipeline system.
1. 90° Carbon Steel Elbow
The 90° elbow is the most widely used type in industrial pipelines, mainly used to achieve a 90-degree change in pipeline direction.
Common sizes include:
1/2"–48" and larger
Long radius (LR)
Short radius (SR)
Seamless or welded construction
Butt-welded connection
The 90° long radius elbow provides a smoother fluid change, thus reducing local pressure loss, and is widely used in oil, gas, chemical, and power engineering projects.
2. 45° Carbon Steel Elbow
The 45° elbow is used to achieve a smaller angle change in pipeline direction.
Compared to 90° elbows, 45° elbows allow for a smoother change in fluid direction, making them more effective in piping systems with high fluid resistance requirements.
In practical engineering, 45° elbows are also frequently used in combination with other pipe fittings to achieve more complex piping layouts.
3. Long Radius Elbows vs. Short Radius Elbows
This is a crucial distinction in carbon steel elbow procurement.
Long Radius Elbow: The centerline radius of curvature of a long radius elbow is typically 1.5 times the nominal diameter (1.5D).
Its bend is gentler, resulting in relatively less pressure loss as fluid flows through, making it widely used in industrial piping.
Short Radius Elbow: The centerline radius of curvature of a short radius elbow is typically 1 time the nominal diameter (1D).
It has a more compact structure, suitable for piping systems with limited installation space, but the fluid turn is more abrupt compared to a long radius elbow.
Therefore, when purchasing, it's not enough to simply confirm "90° elbow"; it's also necessary to confirm whether it's a 1D short radius or a 1.5D long radius.
4. Seamless Carbon Steel Elbows vs. Welded Carbon Steel Elbows
Based on manufacturing methods, carbon steel elbows can be further divided into seamless elbows and welded elbows.
Seamless elbows typically use seamless steel pipes as raw materials, formed through processes such as hot pushing and hot pressing. They offer better overall performance and are suitable for industrial pipelines with high pressure and safety requirements.
Welded elbows are manufactured using steel plates or welded steel pipes and are suitable for applications such as large-diameter pipelines.
For purchasers, it's necessary to select the appropriate manufacturing method based on the pipeline diameter, pressure rating, medium, temperature, and operating environment.
5. Common Carbon Steel Elbow Standards
Industrial projects typically procure carbon steel elbows according to relevant international standards.
Common standards include:
ASME B16.9
ASTM A234
ASME B16.28
DIN standards
EN standards
JIS standards
For example, ASTM A234 WPB is one of the most common carbon steel pipe fitting materials in industrial projects, widely used in pressure piping systems.
When requesting a quote, in addition to dimensions, the material grade, standard, wall thickness, bending radius, and manufacturing method should be specified.
6. What parameters are needed when purchasing carbon steel elbows?
To obtain an accurate quote, it is recommended that customers provide the following information when requesting a quote:
① Elbow type
90°, 45°, or other angles.
② Bending radius
1D, 1.5D, 2D, 2.5D, etc.
③ Dimensions
For example, DN100, NPS 4", etc.
④ Wall Thickness
For example, SCH20, SCH40, SCH80, etc.
⑤ Material
For example, ASTM A234 WPB, A420 WPL6, etc.
⑥ Applicable Standards
For example, ASME B16.9.
⑦ Quantity
Specify the quantity to be purchased.
⑧ Special Requirements
For example, MTC, third-party inspection, sandblasting, painting, packaging, etc. The more complete this information, the easier it is for suppliers to provide accurate quotations quickly.
7. How to Choose the Right Carbon Steel Elbow?
When choosing carbon steel elbows, price should not be the only factor; actual working conditions must also be considered.
For general industrial pipelines, 90° long-radius elbows with a high degree of standardization are preferred.
If installation space is limited, short-radius elbows can be considered.
If the pipeline medium is sensitive to fluid resistance, long-radius elbows with a gentler curvature are preferable.
For high-temperature, high-pressure, or special media conditions, selection should be based on design pressure, operating temperature, material properties, and relevant engineering standards.

Low-carbon steel pipe fittings
Low-carbon steel pipe fittings are a type of carbon steel pipe fitting. Low-carbon steel—defined as having a carbon content of less than 0.25%—is also known as "mild steel" due to its low strength, low hardness, and soft texture.
