What are the classifications of carbon steel elbows?

Nov. 10, 2025

I. Classification by Angle (Most Commonly Used) This is the most frequently mentioned method in construction and procurement:

45° Elbow: Gentle turn, suitable for pipelines with low pressure and slow flow.

90° Elbow: Most widely used, used to change direction.

180° Elbow: Commonly used in reflux, circulation, and heat exchange systems.

In addition, non-standard angles can also be made, such as 30°, 60°, 75°, 135°, etc., customized according to requirements.

II. Classification by Manufacturing Process

Push-formed elbows:** Smooth surface, low fluid resistance, commonly used in high-pressure, large-diameter applications.

Stamped elbows:** Formed by pressing steel plates, suitable for medium to large diameters.

Welded elbows:** Butt-welded to the pipe, good sealing, high strength, used in high-pressure environments.

Pipe-bending elbows:** Bent from a single pipe, fewer weld joints, complete structure.

III. Classification by Connection Method

Butt-welded elbows:** Most commonly used, high strength, good sealing, used in medium to high-pressure pipelines.

Threaded elbows:** Small diameter, easy to install and disassemble, mostly used in low-pressure pipelines.

Flanged elbows:** Suitable for pipelines requiring frequent disassembly or maintenance.

Socket-welded elbows:** Commonly found in small-diameter high-pressure pipelines, providing even better sealing after welding.

IV. Classification by Bending Radius

Long radius elbows (LR):** R=1.5D, low flow resistance, most commonly used in industrial pipelines.

Short radius elbows (SR):** R=1.0D Used when pipeline space is limited, but with greater fluid resistance.

V. Classification by Pressure Rating

Common Standards: ANSI, GB, HG, SH… Pressure ratings range from PN1.0MPa to PN40MPa, selected according to working conditions for petroleum, chemical, boiler, etc.

VI. Classification by Application/Industry Specialty

General Fluid Transport Elbows

Wear-resistant Elbows (for transporting pulverized coal, mortar)

Corrosion-resistant Lined Elbows (lined with rubber, plastic, or ceramic)

Pressure Pipeline Special Elbows (requires testing and certification)

VII. Classification by Carbon Content

1. By Carbon Content Percentage: Low-carbon steel (C: ≤0.25%), Medium-carbon steel (C: 0.25% ≤ C ≤ 0.6%), High-carbon steel (C: >0.6%). Higher carbon content results in higher hardness and strength, but lower plasticity.

2. Classification by steel quality (mainly referring to the content of impurities sulfur and phosphorus): Ordinary carbon steel (S ≤0.055%, P ≤0.045%), high-quality carbon steel (S ≤0.040%, P ≤0.040%), and premium high-quality carbon steel (S ≤0.030%, P ≤0.035%).

3. Classification by application field: Carbon structural steel: mainly used in bridges, ships, building components, and mechanical parts.

How to perform corrosion detection on seamless pipe elbows?

Improper use of seamless pipe elbows can lead to corrosion. Once corrosion occurs, the wall of the seamless pipe elbow typically thins, and localized pitting and corrosion appear. Methods for detecting corrosion in seamless pipe elbows include: Leakage magnetic flux detection is based on the high permeability of ferromagnetic materials.
