A sliding flange is a type of slip-on flange. Slip-on welding involves welding only the outer layer, not the inner layer. Slip-on flanges are typically used for medium- and low-pressure pipelines with a nominal pressure less than 2.5 MPa. There are four types of sealing faces for slip-on flanges: flat face, raised face (RF), FM/M, and tongue and groove (TG). Flat face is the most widely used and the cheapest. A sliding flange is a slip-on flange with a short neck. Carbon steel sliding flanges, or SO flanges, are generally cheaper than welded neck flanges, which is why customers often choose sliding flanges. As the name suggests, a sliding flange fits over a pipe. Its inner diameter is slightly larger than the pipe's outer diameter. These flanges are connected to the pipe via fillet welds at the top and bottom.
However, customers should understand that the two fillet welds required for proper installation will incur additional welding costs, offsetting the initial cost savings. Furthermore, welded neck flanges have a longer service life than sliding flanges.
Slip-on flanges are typically slightly larger than the pipe's outer diameter. Due to their lower initial cost, sliding flanges are favored by many users compared to welded neck flanges. However, due to the higher welding cost, the final installation cost may not be much lower than that of welded neck flanges.
However, sliding flanges still offer many unique advantages in use:
1. Lower installation cost;
2. Saves time in ensuring pipe cutting accuracy;
3. Sliding flanges are easier to align during welding;
4. Since the pipe is already slid into the flange before welding, the error of sliding flanges is smaller;
5. Sufficient strength due to internal and external welding;
6. Good sealing performance.
