The role of flanges in piping systems and key selection points

Jan. 12, 2026

In a piping system, what truly determines long-term stable operation is often not the pipes themselves, but the connections.

And flanges are the most critical, yet most easily overlooked, link in all connections.

Many projects operate well initially, but after six months or a year, frequent leaks, loosening, or even shutdowns for maintenance occur. Tracing the problem back to its source, it's often not a design flaw, but rather insufficient flange selection, manufacturing precision, or fit.

I. Why do flange problems always "disappear later"?

Flanges aren't as conspicuous as equipment, yet they constantly endure multiple challenges:

Cyclic changes in pressure and temperature test the overall strength of the flange.

Tiny errors in the sealing surface are gradually amplified during operation.

Uneven bolt preload leads to seal failure.

Media corrosion begins silently at the connection surface.

These problems are difficult to detect immediately after installation, but they accumulate risks during operation.

II. A good flange is more than just "fitting the dimensions."

In actual projects, truly reliable flanges must achieve "system compatibility."

This means comprehensive consideration is needed:

Type selection: Flat weld, butt weld, blind flange, loose flange; different structures are suitable for different pressure ratings.

Sealing surface form: RF, FF, RTJ; directly affects sealing performance.

Material and operating conditions: Carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel; must match the medium, temperature, and corrosive environment.

Standards: ASME, EN, DIN, GB; requirements vary significantly between projects.

Same size does not equal the same performance.

Truly professional selection ensures the flange fits "just right" in the system.

III. What project owners truly care about are these three things:

In long-term cooperation, more and more clients are focusing on changing priorities:

Batch stability: For the same project, "this batch is good, the next batch is bad."

Processing and testing capabilities: Can flatness, concentricity, and sealing surface accuracy be controlled?

Problem response capability: Can problems be quickly located and resolved on-site?

Flanges are not a one-time purchase; they are critical components throughout the entire project lifecycle.

IV. Keep risks at the factory, keep safety on-site.

In piping systems, all pressure is ultimately transmitted to the connections.

A seemingly ordinary flange determines the sealing, safety, and stability of the entire pipeline.

A truly reliable flange is not one that meets the standards on the drawings, but one that withstands the test of time, pressure, and operating conditions during long-term operation.

If you are selecting flanges for a project, consider this question: Is this flange designed for my operating conditions?

    Carbon steel elbow fabrication

Cangzhou Aosendike Pipe Fittings Manufacturing Co., Ltd. will guide you through information on carbon steel elbow manufacturing. Elbows are a common pipe fitting in piping systems, and a large number of fittings are used at bends. The main function of elbows is to control and maintain pipelines. Control of components such as steering wheels, engines, and gearboxes is primarily achieved through the steering wheel. Because elbows are mostly made of steel, their surfaces are smooth and bright, giving them good wear resistance. Elbows used in piping systems are for turning and are irreversible fittings. They constitute a large proportion of piping systems. Elbow

Why do different projects have different requirements for elbow wall thickness?

In industrial piping systems, elbows are crucial fittings for fluid diversion. Many buyers frequently encounter varying wall thickness requirements when requesting quotes, such as SCH20, SCH40, SCH80, and even SCH160. Many ask: why do different projects have such different wall thickness requirements for carbon steel elbows?
