The difference between stainless steel and carbon steel

Feb. 05, 2026

The main difference between stainless steel and carbon steel is that, apart from carbon content, it does not contain any other alloying elements. Carbon steel typically lacks corrosion resistance and is less hard than pure iron; of course, its carbon content is also subject to certain controls. Stainless steelis diverse, referring to stainless steel alloys with a carbon content greater than or equal to 13%. Stainless steel includes austenitic stainless steel, ferritic stainless steel, martensitic stainless steel, and so on. Stainless steel is generally non-magnetic, but not absolutely non-magnetic. Austenitic stainless steel is non-magnetic, while ferritic stainless steel is magnetic, but relatively weakly so. Different types of stainless steel have different resistance to corrosion and different resistance to different corrosive media.

Regarding the difference between carbon steel and stainless steel, people generally believe that corrosion resistance is the primary factor. However, in practical applications, stainless steel, due to its superior properties, cannot be completely replaced by other steels. For example, certain high-temperature stainless steels, and the excellent surface properties of stainless steel, make it an ideal choice for many decorative materials. At the same time, the excellent mechanical properties of stainless steel are also widely used in various types of manufacturing.

Ordinary steel is carbon steel, which is an iron-carbon alloy. Based on carbon content, steel can be divided into low-carbon steel (wrought iron), medium-carbon steel, and cast iron. Generally, steel with a carbon content below 0.2% is called low-carbon steel, commonly known as wrought iron or pure iron; steel with a carbon content of 0.2% to 1.7% is called steel; and steel with a carbon content above 1.7% is called pig iron.

    Carbon steel elbow fabrication

Cangzhou Aosendike Pipe Fittings Manufacturing Co., Ltd. will guide you through information on carbon steel elbow manufacturing. Elbows are a common pipe fitting in piping systems, and a large number of fittings are used at bends. The main function of elbows is to control and maintain pipelines. Control of components such as steering wheels, engines, and gearboxes is primarily achieved through the steering wheel. Because elbows are mostly made of steel, their surfaces are smooth and bright, giving them good wear resistance. Elbows used in piping systems are for turning and are irreversible fittings. They constitute a large proportion of piping systems. Elbow

Why do different projects have different requirements for elbow wall thickness?

In industrial piping systems, elbows are crucial fittings for fluid diversion. Many buyers frequently encounter varying wall thickness requirements when requesting quotes, such as SCH20, SCH40, SCH80, and even SCH160. Many ask: why do different projects have such different wall thickness requirements for carbon steel elbows?
