The reason why stainless steel pipe fittings have excellent chemical corrosion resistance is mainly due to the following key factors:
1. Formation of passivation film (chromium oxide layer)
Core mechanism: The chromium (Cr) content in stainless steel is usually ≥10.5%. When exposed to an oxygen-containing environment, chromium reacts with oxygen to form a dense chromium oxide (Cr₂O₃) passivation film.
Features:
Self-repairing: Even if the surface is scratched or worn, the passivation film can be regenerated in the presence of oxygen.
Chemical inertness: The passivation film can effectively isolate the metal matrix from the corrosive medium (such as acid, alkali, salt), preventing further oxidation or chemical reaction.
2. Synergistic effect of alloying elements
Nickel (Ni): Improves acid resistance (especially dilute sulfuric acid, organic acid) and ductility, and enhances the stability of the material in a reducing environment.
Molybdenum (Mo): Significantly improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion (such as 316 stainless steel containing 2-3% molybdenum, suitable for chloride ion environment).
Nitrogen (N), copper (Cu): enhance local corrosion resistance and improve the performance of materials in harsh environments (such as seawater).
Low-carbon design (such as 304L, 316L): reducing carbon content can avoid chromium carbide precipitation and prevent intergranular corrosion.
3. Uniformity of microstructure
Austenitic stainless steel (such as 304, 316): face-centered cubic structure (FCC) has high corrosion resistance, is non-magnetic, and is suitable for most chemical environments.
Ferritic/martensitic stainless steel: reduce the risk of electrochemical corrosion by controlling grain boundary composition and reducing impurity segregation.
4. Surface treatment process
Pickling passivation: remove surface impurities (such as iron filings) and strengthen the integrity of the passivation film.
Electrolytic polishing: eliminate microscopic defects, reduce corrosion starting points, and improve surface finish.
5. Environmental adaptability
Oxidizing media (such as nitric acid): the passivation film is more stable under strong oxidizing conditions (typical application: chemical pipelines).
Reducing media (such as dilute sulfuric acid): high-alloy stainless steel containing molybdenum and copper (such as 904L) should be selected.
High temperature environment: stable oxides formed by elements such as chromium and silicon can resist high-temperature oxidation.
Selection principles in practical applications
General environment: 304 (0Cr18Ni9) is suitable for weakly corrosive media (water, atmosphere).
Chlorine-containing environment: 316 (0Cr17Ni12Mo2) is more resistant to pitting corrosion due to the addition of molybdenum.
Strong acid corrosion: duplex stainless steel (2205) or super austenitic stainless steel (254SMO) should be selected.
Failure prevention points
Avoid halogen ion enrichment: Chloride ions may destroy the passivation film, and the concentration needs to be controlled or high-molybdenum materials need to be selected.
Prevent stress corrosion cracking (SCC): In high-temperature chloride environments, SCC-resistant materials (such as duplex steel) need to be selected.
Regular maintenance: Restore the surface protective layer through cleaning and passivation.
Through the synergistic effect of the above factors, stainless steel pipe fittings can maintain long-term stability in complex chemical environments, becoming the preferred material in the fields of chemical industry, energy, and ocean.
