Low-carbon steel seamless pipe

Nov. 02, 2026

Low-carbon steel seamless pipes are seamless tubes manufactured from carbon steel with a carbon content of ≤0.25% through processes such as piercing and rolling. Characterized by moderate strength, excellent plasticity and toughness, and ease of processing, they are among the most widely used basic tubular products in industrial applications. Due to their superior workability, they are commonly referred to in the industry simply as "low-carbon steel."

Performance characteristics of low-carbon steel seamless pipes:

1. Excellent plasticity and toughness: The low carbon content ensures high ductility, facilitating cold-working processes—such as bending, flaring, and stamping—while minimizing the risk of cracking.

3. Good weldability: A low carbon equivalent prevents the formation of hardened microstructures in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) during welding, allowing for high-quality welds without the need for complex preheating. With a carbon equivalent (Ceq) of ≤0.40%, these pipes are well-suited for on-site welding.

4. Seamless integrity: Unlike welded steel pipes, these tubes have no weld seams, offering greater reliability under conditions involving pressure fluctuations and vibrations. They are particularly well-suited for low-to-medium pressure applications where high safety standards are required, such as in hydraulic systems and rotating machinery.

5. Basic corrosion resistance: Carbon steel is not inherently corrosion-resistant; therefore, surface treatments—such as galvanizing, plastic coating, or epoxy coating—are often applied to enhance durability.

Manufacturing processes:

Hot-rolled pipes: Offer high production efficiency and low costs; suitable for general structural applications and mass production.

Cold-drawn pipes: Feature high dimensional precision (up to H8–H9 tolerance grades) and a smooth surface finish; ideal for hydraulic cylinders and precision mechanical components.

Common dimensions:

Outer diameters range from Φ10 mm to Φ630 mm, with wall thicknesses from 1.0 mm to 40 mm. Standard lengths are typically 6 m or 12 m.

Delivery condition: Generally supplied in a hot-rolled, cold-drawn, or normalized state. Typical Applications:

Due to their cost-effectiveness, ease of processing, and absence of weld seams, low-carbon steel seamless pipes are widely used in the following sectors:

1. Fluid Transport: Water supply and drainage piping, fire protection piping, low-pressure steam piping, and compressed air piping;

2. Mechanical Manufacturing: Hydraulic cylinders, pneumatic cylinders, bearing sleeves, drive shafts, and conveyor rollers;

3. Construction and Structural Engineering: Scaffolding, structural steel support columns, bridge railings, and space frame structures;

4. Automotive Industry: Drive shafts, shock absorber reservoirs, and exhaust pipe brackets;

5. Everyday Items: Furniture frames, sports equipment, street light poles, and garment racks.
