Socket-weld flanges (abbreviated as SW flanges) are similar in basic shape to slip-on flanges with hubs, featuring a socket-like recess in the bore. Because a gap exists between the flange and the steel pipe—which can lead to corrosion—a circumferential weld is typically required on the back of the flange; however, applying an internal weld can prevent this type of corrosion. Socket-weld flanges welded on both the inside and outside exhibit 5% higher fatigue strength than slip-on flanges, while their static strength remains the same. When using socket-weld flanges, the internal diameter of the flange must match that of the pipe. These flanges are suitable only for piping with a nominal diameter of 150 mm or less.
