Improving the hardness of carbon steel hot-pressed elbows requires comprehensive consideration of material selection, processing technology optimization, and subsequent heat treatment. The following are specific plans and precautions:
1. Material selection optimization
Select high carbon steel or alloy steel: the higher the carbon content (such as medium-high carbon steel 45#, 55#), the greater the hardness potential. Adding alloy elements (such as Cr, Mo, V) can refine the grains and form carbides, significantly improving hardness and wear resistance.
Precautions: High carbon steel has poor weldability and needs to avoid cracking risks; alloy steel has high costs.
2. Hot pressing process parameter control
Heating temperature control: Avoid excessive temperatures (generally controlled at 30~50℃ above Ac3) to prevent grain coarsening.
Cooling rate optimization: Rapid cooling (such as water cooling or air cooling) is used after forming to promote fine grain structure (such as pearlite or bainite).
Deformation control: Appropriately increasing the deformation can refine the grains and improve hardness.
3. Heat treatment process
Normalizing:
Heat the elbow to 30~50℃ above Ac3, keep warm and air cool, refine the grains and improve uniformity, and the hardness is moderate.
Quenching & Tempering:
Quenching: Heat to above the critical temperature (such as 45 steel heated to 840~860℃), water or oil quenching, obtain high hardness martensite.
Tempering: Low temperature tempering (150~250℃) retains high hardness, medium and high temperature tempering (350~600℃) balances toughness and hardness.
Applicable scenarios: working conditions requiring high wear resistance, but attention should be paid to deformation and cracking risks.
Induction quenching: Rapidly heat and quench the elbow surface to achieve local high hardness and maintain toughness inside.
4. Surface hardening treatment
Carburizing/nitriding:
Carburizing (applicable to low carbon steel): quenching after surface carburization, the surface hardness reaches HRC58-62.
Nitriding: a nitride layer is formed on the surface, which is hard and corrosion-resistant (no quenching is required, and deformation is small).
Shot peening: improve surface hardness through cold work hardening, and improve fatigue resistance at the same time.
5. Alloying and microstructure regulation
Microalloying: adding elements such as Nb and Ti to inhibit grain growth and improve comprehensive performance.
Controlling the final rolling temperature: rapid cooling to the bainite transformation zone after hot pressing to obtain high-hardness bainite structure.
Precautions
Balance between hardness and toughness: excessive pursuit of hardness may lead to brittle fracture, and the tempering temperature needs to be selected according to the working conditions.
Deformation control: tooling and fixtures need to be used during heat treatment to reduce deformation. Nitriding or shot peening is preferred for complex-shaped elbows.
Treatment after welding repair: re-heat treatment is required after welding to avoid softening of the heat-affected zone.
Recommended solution
Conventional working conditions: normalizing (low cost, simple process).
High wear resistance requirements: quenching + low temperature tempering or surface carburizing.
Corrosion resistance + wear resistance: nitriding treatment (such as QPQ process).
Limited budget: shot peening cold hardening.
Through the above method, the hardness of carbon steel elbows can be increased to HRC25-60 (depending on the specific process). It is recommended to conduct a small batch test to verify the process parameters.
