General standards for stainless steel elbows

Apr. 03, 2026

Stainless steel elbows, common pipe fittings in piping systems, are primarily used to change the flow direction of fluids and the routing of pipes, making them an indispensable component of pipe connections. In actual pipeline installation, when a change in pipeline routing is required, stainless steel elbows effectively ensure smooth pipe turns, guaranteeing normal fluid transport. Stainless steel elbows are mainly made of stainless steel, commonly 304 and 316 stainless steel.

Stainless Steel Elbow Dimensions and Specifications

1. Nominal Diameter (DN): Indicates the nominal size of the pipe's inner diameter (unit: millimeters), such as DN15 (4-way branch pipe), DN100 (4-inch pipe), which must match the piping system.

2. Rated Pressure (PN): Indicates the maximum working pressure the elbow can withstand (unit: megapascals). Common ratings include PN1.6, PN2.5, and PN16, which need to be selected in conjunction with the medium pressure. 3. Bending Radius (R) The radius of the center arc of a bend is divided into a long radius (R=1.5D) (low flow resistance, widely used) and a short radius (R=1D) (space-saving, used in confined spaces).

Materials and Properties of Stainless Steel Elbows

1. Mainstream Materials:

304 Stainless Steel (06Cr19Ni10): Resistant to weak corrosion (water, air), economical, suitable for general applications.

316/316L Stainless Steel (06Cr17Ni12Mo2): Contains molybdenum, resistant to strong corrosion (seawater, chemical media), with good high-temperature performance.

Special Materials: Such as 321 (high temperature resistant) and 347 (resistant to intergranular corrosion), used for special working conditions.

2. Key Performance Indicators

Corrosion Resistance: Verified through intergranular corrosion testing (e.g., GB/T 4334 standard).

Mechanical Properties: Yield strength ≥ 205 MPa, tensile strength ≥ 520 MPa (taking 304 as an example), must meet the requirements of ASTM/AISI standards, etc.

Common Standards for Stainless Steel Bends

1. ASTM Standards

ASTM is a standard set by the American Society for Testing and Materials. Its stainless steel elbow standards mainly include ASTM A403 and ASTM B366. ASTM A403 is suitable for elbows in high-temperature, high-pressure, and corrosive environments, while ASTM B366 is suitable for marine environments or applications with high oxide content.

2. ASME Standards

ASME is a standard set by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Its stainless steel elbows have advantages such as high strength, high temperature resistance, high pressure resistance, and corrosion resistance, and are widely used in nuclear power plants, petrochemicals, and other fields. The most commonly used ASME standards are B16.9 and B16.28. B16.9 is suitable for large-diameter pipe connections, while B16.28 is suitable for small-diameter pipe connections. 3. DIN Standards

DIN standards are developed by the German National Organization for Standardization and are primarily applicable to the production and use of stainless steel elbows in Europe. DIN 2605 is suitable for elbows operating at normal temperature and pressure, while DIN 2609 is suitable for high-temperature and high-pressure pipelines.

4. JIS Standards

JIS standards are developed by the Japanese Industrial Standards Organization. The main standards for stainless steel elbows include JIS B2311, JIS B2312, and JIS B2313. JIS B2311 is suitable for elbows operating at normal pressure (below 20 kgf/cm²), while JIS B2312 is suitable for elbows operating at high pressure (above 20 kgf/cm²).

Selecting high-quality stainless steel elbows that meet relevant standards as a reference:

1. Determine working conditions: Select the material (304/316L) based on the medium (e.g., degree of corrosion), and match the nominal diameter (DN) and pressure rating (PN/Sch) according to the pressure and temperature. For high flow rates, it is best to use long-radius elbows (R=1.5D). 2. Standard System Verification: For domestic projects, select national standards (GB/T 12459, etc.); for export projects, select US standards (ASME B16.9), European standards (EN), etc., depending on the region; confirm material standards (e.g., ASTM A403) and dimensional tolerances.

3. Quality Document Verification: Material certificates, non-destructive testing reports (radioactive/penetrating electron microscopy), and pressure test records are required. Imported components require CE/ASME certification and customs declaration.

4. Marking and Workmanship Inspection: The surface must be marked with standard numbers, materials, specifications, etc.; for welded elbows, check welder qualifications and process assessment; for seamless elbows, confirm the forging process.

5. Prioritize Compliant Suppliers: Select manufacturers with pressure piping component qualifications and ISO certification, and conduct factory inspections or sample testing (spectral analysis, hardness testing) when necessary.

    Carbon steel elbow fabrication

Cangzhou Aosendike Pipe Fittings Manufacturing Co., Ltd. will guide you through information on carbon steel elbow manufacturing. Elbows are a common pipe fitting in piping systems, and a large number of fittings are used at bends. The main function of elbows is to control and maintain pipelines. Control of components such as steering wheels, engines, and gearboxes is primarily achieved through the steering wheel. Because elbows are mostly made of steel, their surfaces are smooth and bright, giving them good wear resistance. Elbows used in piping systems are for turning and are irreversible fittings. They constitute a large proportion of piping systems. Elbow

Why do different projects have different requirements for elbow wall thickness?

In industrial piping systems, elbows are crucial fittings for fluid diversion. Many buyers frequently encounter varying wall thickness requirements when requesting quotes, such as SCH20, SCH40, SCH80, and even SCH160. Many ask: why do different projects have such different wall thickness requirements for carbon steel elbows?
