Seamless steel pipes can be classified into four categories based on different manufacturing processes: hot-rolled seamless steel pipes, hot-expansion seamless steel pipes, cold-drawn seamless steel pipes, and cold-rolled seamless steel pipes.
Hot-rolled seamless steel pipes are produced by punching round steel into tube blanks using a punching machine, and then rolling them into the required outer diameter using a hot rolling mill, ultimately forming the hot-rolled seamless steel pipe product. This process is simple and relatively inexpensive, but the dimensional accuracy is not high. Domestic production technology can produce hot-rolled seamless steel pipes with outer diameters ranging from 60mm to 600mm.
Hot-expansion seamless steel pipes are made by heating seamless steel pipe blanks or finished seamless steel pipes to above 1050 degrees Celsius in an electric furnace, and then expanding them together with an alloy core to a certain outer diameter. Hot-expansion seamless steel pipes have thinner walls, shorter lengths, and larger outer diameters than the raw materials.
Cold-drawn seamless steel pipes are formed by stretching seamless steel pipe blanks or finished seamless steel pipes using grinding tools on a cold drawing machine. It is performed simultaneously with the hot expansion and contraction process. The stretched finished pipe is longer than the raw material, with thinner walls and a smaller outer diameter. This stretching process requires no heating, can be formed at room temperature, and allows for secondary annealing. Sometimes, annealing is not necessary.
Like cold drawing, cold rolling is also performed at room temperature, but the cold rolling mill differs from the cold drawing mill. Cold drawing uses molds for forming, while cold rolling uses grinding tools for gradual forming; therefore, cold rolling is slower than cold drawing.
