Corrosion resistance of pipe fittings: materials and coatings

Nov. 20, 2024

The corrosion resistance of pipe fittings is crucial in industry, construction and transportation systems. The choice of different materials and coatings directly affects their service life and performance in specific environments. The following are the corrosion resistance characteristics of some common pipe fitting materials and coatings:

I. Materials

1. Carbon steel

•Advantages: low price and high strength.

•Disadvantages: poor corrosion resistance and coating protection is required.

•Applicable scenarios: used for low-corrosive media, such as water or air pipes at room temperature.

2. Stainless steel

•Common types: 304, 316, 316L, etc.

•Advantages:

Excellent corrosion resistance (especially 316L in seawater and strong acid environments).

High temperature resistance.

•Disadvantages: high price.

•Applicable scenarios: highly corrosive environments in chemical, pharmaceutical and food industries.

3. Copper

•Advantages: good corrosion resistance and thermal conductivity.

•Disadvantages: high cost and relatively low mechanical strength.

•Applicable scenarios: drinking water pipelines, heat exchangers.

4. Alloy steel

•Types: nickel-based alloys (such as Hastelloy), titanium alloys, etc.

•Advantages:

Can withstand extreme corrosion (such as strong acid and strong alkali environments).

Excellent heat resistance.

•Disadvantages: Expensive, usually used in special occasions.

•Applicable scenarios: Pipeline systems under high temperature and high pressure environments.

5. Plastic (non-metal)

•Types: PVC, PE, PP, PVDF, etc.

•Advantages: Strong corrosion resistance, light weight, no rust.

•Disadvantages: Poor high temperature resistance and low mechanical strength.

•Applicable scenarios: Chemical and sewage treatment pipelines.

2. Coating

In order to improve the corrosion resistance of pipe fittings, coating technology is often used for metal pipe fittings.

1. Epoxy coating

•Advantages: Strong chemical corrosion resistance and good adhesion.

•Disadvantages: Long-term exposure to high temperature or ultraviolet rays may cause aging.

•Applicable scenarios: Underground pipelines and drinking water transmission pipelines.

2. Hot-dip galvanizing

•Advantages: Form a dense zinc layer to prevent steel corrosion.

•Disadvantages: Limited resistance to strong acid and high temperature.

•Applicable scenarios: Outdoor steel structure pipe fittings and drainage systems.

3. Polyethylene (PE) coating

•Advantages: Excellent chemical corrosion resistance and good insulation.

•Disadvantages: Poor tolerance to high temperature or flame.

•Applicable scenarios: Submarine pipelines, urban gas pipelines.

4. Anticorrosive paint

•Types: alkyd paint, acrylic paint, chlorinated rubber paint, etc.

•Advantages: Easy to apply and strong adaptability.

•Disadvantages: Regular maintenance and re-coating may be required.

•Applicable scenarios: External protection of pipelines in ordinary industrial environments.

5. Rubber lining

•Advantages: Strong wear resistance and acid and alkali resistance.

•Disadvantages: Susceptible to high temperature.

•Applicable scenarios: Pipelines for transporting corrosive media in chemical and mining industries.

III. Selection recommendations

1. According to the nature of the medium: acids, alkalis, salts, solvents, etc. have a significant impact on the selection of materials.

2. According to environmental conditions: temperature, pressure and humidity have different requirements for corrosion resistance.

3. Economic trade-off: Find a balance between performance and cost.

By properly selecting materials and coatings, the service life of pipe fittings can be effectively extended and their reliability in complex environments can be improved.

Advantages of seamless carbon steel elbows

The raw material for seamless carbon steel elbows is seamless steel pipe. The main production process involves heating and piercing a round tube billet, then rolling it using three-roll cross rolling, continuous rolling, or extrusion to set (or reduce) the outer diameter of the pipe. After cooling, it is straightened. It undergoes direct hydrostatic testing (or flaw detection), is marked, and then stored. Schxx represents the wall thickness grade; 180e (S) indicates a short-radius 180° carbon steel elbow, and 180e (L) indicates a long-radius 180° elbow; 90E (S) indicates a short-radius 90° carbon steel elbow, and 90e (L) indicates a long-radius 90° elbow; 45

180° carbon steel pipe elbow manufacturing process

The most common manufacturing process for carbon steel pipe bends is hot forming. Hot forming is divided into two types: hot push bending and hot heating bending. Our 180° carbon steel pipe bends are manufactured using the hot push process. The process flow diagram is shown below.

What are the advantages of using sliding flanges?

A sliding flange is a type of slip-on flange. Slip-on welding involves welding only the outer layer, not the inner layer. Slip-on flanges are typically used for medium- and low-pressure pipelines with a nominal pressure less than 2.5 MPa. There are four types of sealing faces for slip-on flanges: flat face, raised face (RF), FM/M, and tongue and groove (TG). Flat face is the most widely used and the cheapest. A sliding flange is a slip-on flange with a short neck. Carbon steel sliding flanges, or SO flanges, are generally cheaper than welded neck flanges, which is why customers often choose sliding flanges. As the name suggests, a sliding flange fits over a
