Advantages and disadvantages of slip-on flanges

Sep. 11, 2025

Slip-on flanges are a common flange type. During installation, the pipe is inserted into the flange's inner hole and secured with a fillet weld. Due to its simple structure and relatively low price, it is widely used in low-pressure piping systems. Below, I summarize the main advantages and disadvantages of slip-on flanges:

Advantages

Easy installation

The pipe is inserted into the flange's inner hole, positioned, and then welded on both sides. This operation is simpler than a butt-weld flange and requires less weld precision.

Lower cost

Material and processing requirements are lower than those of a butt-weld flange, making it suitable for large-scale use and more economical overall.

Lower pipe end surface requirements

Simply flatten the pipe end, eliminating the need for the stringent beveling required for butt-weld flanges.

Wide range of applications

Commonly used in low-pressure, medium- and low-temperature piping systems, suitable for conveying media such as water, steam, compressed air, and low-pressure oil and gas.

Easy maintenance and replacement

Easier disassembly and assembly for pipeline modification or maintenance, reducing installation complexity. Disadvantages:

Poor strength and rigidity

Because it's only a fillet weld connection, its overall load-bearing capacity and tensile strength are inferior to those of butt-weld flanges, and its pressure-bearing capacity is limited.

Welding stress concentration: The welds are located on the inside and outside, which can easily cause stress concentration when subjected to stress. It's not suitable for environments with high stress, strong vibration, or hazardous media.

Slightly poor corrosion resistance: The flange's inner bore is slightly larger than the pipe diameter, creating a gap between the pipe end and the flange, which can easily trap media and cause crevice corrosion.

Unsuitable for high pressure and high temperature: Its general operating pressure rating is PN 1.6 MPa or below (or Class 150 or Class 300). Its use in environments with high temperature, high pressure, or flammable and toxic media poses a greater risk.

Low sealing reliability: Compared to butt-weld or socket-weld flanges, its sealing performance is slightly weaker, making it unsuitable for applications requiring extremely high sealing performance.

Summary:

Slip-on flanges offer advantages such as easy installation and low cost. They are commonly used in low-pressure, non-critical piping systems (such as water treatment, HVAC, and general industrial pipelines). However, in environments with high pressure, high temperature, severe corrosion, or extremely high safety requirements, butt-weld flanges or socket-weld flanges are typically used.
