Low-carbon steel pipe fittings are a type of carbon steel pipe fitting. Low-carbon steel—defined as having a carbon content of less than 0.25%—is also known as "mild steel" due to its low strength, low hardness, and soft texture.
Mechanical Properties of Low-Carbon Steel
Low-carbon steel is a ductile material. Its stress-strain curve comprises four stages: the elastic stage, the yield stage, the strain-hardening stage, and the localized deformation stage. Distinct yielding and necking phenomena occur during the deformation process. The initial phase is the elastic stage, where stress rises linearly, fully obeying Hooke's Law. Beyond the proportional limit, deformation accelerates, though a distinct yield stage is no longer observed.
This category encompasses most common carbon structural steels and some high-quality carbon structural steels. While most can be used for structural components without heat treatment, certain wear-resistant mechanical parts require carburizing or other heat treatments. The annealed microstructure of low-carbon steel consists of ferrite and a small amount of pearlite; while strength and hardness are low, plasticity and toughness are excellent. Consequently, it exhibits good cold-forming properties and is suitable for processes such as rolling, bending, and stamping. Such steels also possess good weldability. Low-carbon steels with carbon contents between 0.1% and 0.3% are easily forged, welded, and machined, and are frequently used to manufacture items such as chains, rivets, bolts, and shafts.
Classification of Carbon Steel:
1. Low-carbon steel / Mild steel (AISI 1005–1026): Carbon content 0.06%–0.28%, manganese 0.25%–1%, phosphorus ≤0.04%, and sulfur ≤0.05%.
2. Carbon steel (AISI 1029–1053): Carbon content 0.25%–0.55%, manganese 0.30%–1.00%, phosphorus ≤0.04%, and sulfur ≤0.05%. 3. High-carbon steel (AISI 1055–1095): Carbon content ranges from 0.60% to 1.03%, manganese content from 0.30% to 0.90%, phosphorus content does not exceed 0.04%, and sulfur content does not exceed 0.05%.
Low-carbon steel is commonly used to manufacture pipe fittings and is widely applied in piping engineering. Low-carbon steel pipe fittings offer numerous advantages—such as good toughness, low cost, and long service life—making them highly popular among domestic and international customers.
New Applications
Due to the inherent properties of low-carbon steel, its scope of application was once significantly limited. However, with the adoption of new technologies in the iron and steel industry, many new applications for low-carbon steel have been fully developed and utilized.
